just gratuitously soliciting feedback: I chose to turn "The Girls" into a sepia duotone, and was wondering if it was the right choice or not. I received wonderful feedback on them (thanks everybody who took the time). One of those 'close yet so far' 7th pace finishes. what say you? The colour one is directly from the camera, no edits at all.
What a difference! I definitely prefer sepia. The grass in the foregound in messy, and the clouds are less defined in the color shot. Duotone gives it a very special mysterious kinda feeling of a gloomy windy day. In color, it loses that a little. So, good choice. It was one of my favorites in the challenge.
I threw the colour one into PhotoPaint and had a go...if you do a contrast enhancement and slight gamma reduction it really pops the colour. It's really flat as it is. I much prefer the edited colour version. Of course, I'm not a big sepia fan...colour or black and white. Sepia seems to be abused to death on this site. It has its place, but...
I love the sepia one. I also think that the additional color that jimmy posted is a bit better than the other color one. It makes the mud in the bottom right looks a little better.
Matt -> not sure why I did that. It was one of those things I tried that day...did it to a few photos, and didn't dislike it. Can't say as though i love it, but it makes choosing the tone (esp on colour photos) easier. i find solid colour borders to be a bit intrusive, and i don't like black or white on most sepia prints. quite a conundrum...
I agree it doesn't add to the photo, but I don't think it detracts, either. maybe a ribbon without it? nah, not likely.

Nah, no ribbon without it. It is one of my pet peeves lately that since Belle Naturelle, everyone is trying these funked up borders that don't really do anything for me. White lines inside pictures, see through borders, etc, all of which I think violate the rules as they are written. I understand I'm in the minority there, but I think you have a photograph (at least in pieces) inside your border. As for how it looks outside DPC, it's fine - as you said, doesn't add or detract.
I don't mind black/white borders, but other colors typically are intrusive. If I did a sepia that is your tone, I would likely choose to either a) not border, or b) white border it with like 4px on each side.
Just my 2c and I hope my means of communicating my idea didn't detract from the fact I actually just don't like those kind of borders. I'm still playing around with my own, so ... no expert.
