hi. I dont do it myself, but I think I know what you're after.
In Photoshop, create a box (marquee tool) in the image, separtating the print into the main part, and a border area. Because you want to alter the border area, press shift+ctrl+I, to reverse your selected area. Any changes you now make will alter the border area. Any features you change will just change the border area. For example, if you change the hue or saturation(ctrl+alt+u) you will then have a border slightly different from the main image. Another idea may be to invert this border area once selected (ctrl+I). Once you have a border area selected, just play around to see how it can be altered. hope that helps.
