As I look through the results of the "Black on Black" challenge, I am aggravated to see that I could have submitted my photo entitled The Agony of Defeat. The challenge rules never stated that the photos submitted do not neccesarily have to have a black object on a black object. What I saw from the results was that most of the photos just had a dark subject on a black backround. Did this happen to anyone else?
I am still trying to figure out my 2nd to last placing and 2nd worst rated ever. Only 5 coments and just under a 4. Would like any other input besides the ones that helped some. thanks Gas Plant and I do realize that this was a tough one, but it scored less than a few that looked like a black canvas. (sorry to whomever...I am sure I commented on those)

I probably would have scored it a 6 or 7 if I could have seen the towers/stacks and if you had desaturated. I gave it a 5 as is. I didn't get much in the way of comments on mine either. FWIW I normally enjoy your images. Cheers.
I did give yours a 6. And I did leave a comment. I had taken the shot quite a few days earlier, but got involved in finishing some portrait shots, and forgot about the challenge. I had 30 minutes to get it in. That is almost exactly how it came out of the camera. I did try cropping it closer, but would have needed to edit alot (since we could) more and had no time anyway. Oh well. Thanks

Thanx Tracy. What you said there makes perfect sense. I'm guilty of missing the comments made after the challenges end. :)
I only received two comments, but they were fairly helpful. This WAS a tough challenge to do and to vote upon. I would like to have a repeat. However, I am glad I was introduced to this style of photography. I suppose that was the overall goal after all.
I think the issue for some, Tracy, were the bright spots. By definition, low key shouldn't have less than 18% grey equivalent, and those lights likely reach 0% grey in the flare.
So technically speaking it's not low key. it is primarily dark...but not low key. if it were "night shots", or "gas plants in the dark" I'd have given you a 7 or 8 (depending on my mood, I guess), but as it was I gave a 5.
Agreed this was very hard to submit to, and vote on. Partly due to the title ambiguity, and partly because it's just hard stuff to shoot.

The funny thing i experienced was that it was exposed as if i was shooting for bonb, but then in the processing my mind refused to accept that and deliberately did the levels and curves in such a way to lighten it up. Just couldn't help. So, i didn't submit this one either. Guess bonb doesn't agree with me.
And furthermore, how come i can't get spaces around my linked text? I have edited this post now twice and no matter what i can't get a space before this and after picture regardless where i put the spaces. Oh well.

Try putting only a single space before and ofter the URL links, not around the text inside the link. I think multiple spaces may be treated as words, not spaces, and thus compacted.

For the BonB I would have liked it better with less light in the BG. It's a pretty image but I'm not sure I like the way the butterfly/moth is positioned wrt the feather. Maybe it's the unnatural aspect of it. The juxtaposition doesn't work for me.

A good way to get a good shot for black on black is to have your subject away from the background. The light should only shine on the subject and not the background. I think you can do it. Give it another try. I am practicing low-key and high-key shots. Good luck!
Thanks you two. Orussell, you hit the nail on the head by saying that the juxtaposition was unnatural. That's why the pic didn't do anything to me. It made no sense and there was no reason for making it other than playing with bonb.
Sonifo, i may try this more lateron, in the more introspective winter season. Can see good uses for the technique though. It was a fun experiment but for right now there are lots of things i want to explore outdoors. BonB is not where i'm AT right now (sorry for the cliché).
Btw, O, about your signature. I disagree. We learn something every day; it's just that most of the time we aren't aware of it. Humans have this funny notion of what a day should be to attach some meaning to it (good day/bad day/happy day/blah day). It's actually 24 hours filled with meaning.
