There are programs that specifically make VCD slide show cd's. I have never done it before but if you have IrfanView (free) //www.irfanview.com/ and the latest Nero Burning Rom 5.5 //www.nero.com together they should be able to make a slideshow VCD. I already have Nero, which came with my burner. I haven't tried making the VCD yet, but I'll try it later and let you know.
There are other programs out there too. This is just one example. There are probably some easier programs to do this...
I bought a hp 7550 printer and it came with software that is able to perform a slide show and can be also inserted into cdrom and play the slide show there too. It also allows you to add music to your slide show. I believe it is photosmart software.

I've had good experiences with Ulead Picture Show... it'll also convert virtually any movie clip so it can be on your VCD, great for cameras that capture movie clips!
Another nice way to present your photos is Adobe Photoshop Album. This will create slideshows and DVDs, although I've not had experience of using it for that yet. You can also catalogue and back up all your images. It will also create a 3d gallery of your photos that you can put on the internet... check out //www.dolphinfactory.com/photogallery/ If this is the first time you've been to an Atmosphere web site, it'll take a few minutes to download the plug-in. Then wait for the pictures to load. Ctrl + Mouse lets you look up and down. You can also chat to whoever else happens to be there. Pretty cool.
BTW, my gallery will only work with Internet Explorer.

I've had some experience with this. Often times, certain cd's won't play on certain players. For me, trying some other brands of CDR's helped.

I hope you didn't wast three CDR's. I did get irfanview to work, after I upgraded Nero (from 5.5.7 to 5.5.10). I burnt the same CDRW twice and it worked both times. The second time it automatically erased the CDRW before it burnt it.
The picture quality is pretty poor, but about the same quality as any photo I display on the TV is. Like TV out from my computer or the AV out of my camera.
It could be your DVD player. Not all are fully VCD capable.
I use Ulead DVD PictureShow and it works very well and is easy to use.
I have tried it with various brands of cd and also cdrw and all have worked ok on my dvd player.
I`m sure there must be some freeware out there that can also do this.

Can you created this CD on your regular computer with a CD burner drive? Can you use regular CD-R's, and not have to have a DVD burner or DVD-rewritables? I've never heard of this. Are only high-end DVD players usually compatible?

Yes, more are compatable than not.
