She is a medical doctor (neurologist/psychiatrist?) originally from Bulgaria who used to reside in North Carolina, but is an accomplished photographer as well. She was the recipient of the Durham Arts Council Emerging Artists Grant in 2001 (I think), as well as an exhibiting artist in the North Carolina Museum of Art's 48th Triennial North Carolina Artists Exhibition.
I had the pleasure of seeing some of her work at Georganne Bingham's home in Roanoke, VA last evening (at an Artist Group Task Force Meeting for the new Art Museum of Western Virginia). Georganne was a friend of Kalina's a few years back and spoke VERY highly of her. Unfortunately, she lost touch with her, but would love to reconnect. I told her that I would try to find her by searching online - for both of us! Her photography is simply exquisite. Her nude "landscapes" are certainly wonderfully thought provoking and artistic, but she did four portraits of Georgeann's grandchildren that are (to me) just beyond words.
