Well, it happened. The people have spoken. The people of this state approved an amendment 3 to 1 that will ban homosexuals from getting married. It will now be written in the constitution that marriage will be defined as a union between a man and a woman. I can't believe something like this has ended up in the constitution. Very scary and sad.
You could do what my wife & I plan to do when our kids graduate from HS, move to Maine (from Tennessee which I'm sure is equally intolerent as Texas). Maine voted no yesterday on a simular admendment.
Think maybe I'll move to Texas...sounds like people with good sound values. Hooray for people with real courage!
Those states that have banded marriage for gays have much higher divorce rates than those that haven't. So much for good sound values. I’m just spit balling here, but maybe if they were at home taking care of their own families rather than worrying about someone else’s business than they might have better luck at keeping their families together.

Our daughter is only 10 months old, so we don't have to wait. Luckily, my husband's job is relocating, so we are moving to New York or New Jersey within the next few months.

I’m glad to be a dad too. I'm personally a heterosexual, but the only qualms I'll have if my kids become gay would be my fear of discrimination by narrow-minded people.
My husband and I have gone back and forth on this issue for quite awhile. We've just agreed to disagree and leave it at that. He was born and raised in Georgia and I in California. He disagrees with it while I am all for it.
It seems that some people cannot separate the religious from the civil aspect of it. I honestly don't understand how someone can be against it, but that's just me. I can understand how you wouldn't agree with it, but to force others to live by your standards is just wrong. I'm not gay, but I truly feel sorry for those that can't show their love and commitment to their significant other as I can, just because they are the same sex. Where is the logic?? Do they not feel as we feel?? Why should they not have the same rights to healthcare, hospital rights and all other legal aspects of marriage that I do? I'm not special. It just baffles me, the closed-mindedness that surrounds this issue. Can't we all just live or lives the way we want to live them. As long as we're not hurting anyone, I see no crime here.

Riponlady, I agree. Why not get rid of marriage and have only civil unions. If a couple wants to follow-up with a religious marriage, they can do that too. It just does not make sense to me to amend the constitution to discriminate against a person or group of people.
A government can only ban the 'civil' side of marriages. In essence, the government will not recognize the marriage though a church might. It is my belief that a marriage is a contract between two people - a partnership if you will. On the business side of things, imagine if the government made laws about who one could go into a business partnership with. Rather ridiculous, yes?
A civil marriage is a contract - nothing more or less. The government has no right to say who can sign a contract if both parties are of sound mind and of age.

Don't even get me started on the Evolution book banning thing. They tried to do that here for a brief second, until someone realized how ridiculous it made us look. I was seriously wondering what I was going to do once my children hit school age. I can tell you one thing, we would've had a new address, that's for sure. How they thought that was going to be acceptable was beyond me. There was no way, my children were going to be taught such narrowmindedness, no way! I could just imagine their college years and the ridiculous looks they would've recieved while speaking on the subject. Why does everything have to be packed away in a neat little box that someone else has decided that that's the way it should be??? I just don't get it sometimes.
Not gay, but all for it. People should be allowed to live their lives how they want without someone who may be threatened by homosexuality dictating how they will live. People fear what they don't know.

First we gave rights to woman and what a mistake that was, now gays want it and we haven't even been able to take it away from the women. :D I'm only kidding about the womens rights thing.

I think they should ban mariage for everyone named Kevin as well as reduce their yearly income and deprive them from voting. The world would be such a better place. :-)

I figure, if you have legal unions, that cover all the bases of a marriage...who cares about the semantics.
The Exec. Director where I work, who is a good friend as well, is in a legal union with her partner for over 10 years. She has two great kids, both boys, ages 9 and 11 who are well loved, well educated, healthy, active, go-getters who will surely improve the world we live in as soon as they're given the chance. I can't praise their family dynamic more.
On the ohter hand, my friends that are married in "normal" hetero relationships are all perfecly miserable and many of their kids are a complete mess. Go figure?

OK, this is all good. What we need is some 10-15 years of such rule. We need to let the evangelists and right-wing conservatives take over the whole country. The only way to convince people that this is not the way to go is to let them have it.
Yes, one generation will be screwed, but in 15 years, we will turn back and ask ourselves: where are our moral values? Where is the equality? Where are we socially? How wide is the gap between haves and havenots?
Once we have all the laws in place to 'protect' us, then we will have no other choice than to reflect on the state of the union. And then we will realize that it is not about whether two men/two women can marry... and whether when we pull someone's fingernails in Cuba it is not torture... and numerous other examples.

I thought it was generally believed that gays are born that way, and don't "become" gay?
