The following images show my personal workflow for creating finished infrared images with my camera...

Arts and Science Center - Original Image

This is a normally exposed shot with no modifications and no infrared filter.

Arts and Science Center - Original Infrared

This is the exact same composition with the infrared filter in place. Both of these images were shot at F5.6, but the Infrared image was exposed for 10 seconds instead of 1/80" in the first image. Getting a decent working exposure with an infrared filter just takes some trial and error. I shot the IR version at about 8 different shutter speeds between 20 and 5 seconds to find the one I liked best.

Arts and Science Center - Infrared with Autolevels

This is the original infrared image with nothing but autolevels applied with PS Elements.

Arts and Science Center - Infrared - Autolevels - BW Conversion

This is the previous photo converted to black and white.


Arts and Science Center - IR - AL - BW - Contrast

This is the previous image with a +14 bump on the contrast from PS Elements...

Arts and Science Center - IR - AL - BW - Contrast - Hues

This is the previous image colorized with +33 on hue and +14 on saturation to add the warm sepia tone back to the image.

Arts and Science Center - Finished Image

This is the finished image cropped to a 1.25:1 ratio for prints. It also has some very minor 'burning' to remove the minor bit of lens flare that was in the image. That's an illegal edit on DPC.

Different digital cameras behave differently with an IR filter installed. I use the Hoya R72 filter. My IR images are NOT shot in the 'nightshot' mode on the camera.

Thanks for that.. i'll be getting my IR filter very soon ( i hope.. shipping has been slow) ..

i wonder though how people get those nice blue sky photos.. someone had mentioned once to swap the red and blue channels, but that ended up terribly blue (by using yours to test out)...
