Hi everyone,

I'm looking forward to taking shots of fireworks this year (first time with this camera), and was thinking about the focus. I'll use Manual mode and manual focus, and then turn the focus ring all the way clockwise until it's at infinity and leave it that way... no problem.

But my question is, does anyone know what the S602 focus is set to when you're using Auto-Focus and the camera can't focus? You know, when you see the "AF!" warning. Does the camera default to infinity, or is it just some random setting?

There is a lot of debate about that, or a lot of discussion at least. You may also want to check out DPReview. But I've been told that to set the focus to infinity: you put the camera in Landscape Mode, cover the lense with the lense cap, use auto focus until you see the "error," then switch to Manual Focus, you should be at Infinity.

It's possible that ANY time you see the focus error it defaults to infinity, but this method is a sure way to get there. I hope this helps.

Thanks Rob... actually I just got finished reading a HUGE thread at DPReview on this. Here's the thread if anyone is interested, but be warned, it contains more information that most people can digest in one sitting. :)

And what is the summary of your read?

To sum up what I know:
Camera defaults to 2m distance in any mode but landscape.
Turning the focus ring all the way to one side does not set focus to infinity.
When there is a moon, use that to set infinity focus on with a large aperture. Try any other bright object, even the first firework flashes itself.
As soon as you've got a autofocus lock, switch it to manual focus and leave it alone. Don't touch the zoom anymore.

My fireworks settings are F8, 4-8s, ISO160. I always managed to get a decent first AF lock on the city in the background itself. I try to get on the dark side of the display, because the bright side gives a nice background in the photo.
