Probably the best way is to pre-size all the images to the final size first, and then copy them into the new composite image.
That way you can do your final adjustments/sharpening on the individual images at the final size, rather than having to try and so all that in the final image.
Most importantly, keep each composent of the composition on a separate layer. That way you can always modify that part by itself if necessary. I then use SaveAsCopy to save a flattened TIFF or JPEG version for printing or posting.
Your technique might have to be somewhat different if you're compositing/blending images, not just assembling several in one layout.
Oh yeah, SAVE frequently.
