i love the x-drive!!! me and my best friend used it for our vacation .. he has a smart media and i have compact flash and it was great .. as soon as the cards were full we took turns dumping the files into the drive .. we go the 10gb drive ... it's plenty :)

The Archos jukebox multimedia and V-MP3H are the nearest hits so far, but fall down in one or two categories.
so glad you are bringing this up.. I have been asking around for the past couple of weeks about these vs. laptops.. Almost bought a used laptop for $300, but my husband was concerned about, among other things, that it would not be practical. How is the PSD in airports? Do you pack it in your luggage? How about xrays vs. losing data? How about making file folders for different subjects? Any other thoughts?
I have an Archos Jukebox I got in August. I've had some problems getting it to consistently recognize the SmartMedia cards from my Olympus, and it sometimes won't copy all of the files on the card. I've had no problems using it as a USB drive on either PC or Mac. I've not yet had a chance to contact their tech support or install any updaters if they exist, so these may be known and fixable problems.

Any major computer outlet or online - 2.5" drives are the ones used in notebooks/laptop computers :)

The x-drive has a built in rechargable battery. The manual says it is good for 500 recharges. So far I've not run into any problem with battery life, but I haven't been on any all day trips with it yet. It's only on when you download (which is about 3 minutes for 124 meg stick)
The biggest downside is you have to have faith in it... Once it says you've downloaded, I found it hard to trust it enough to delete the files from the camera's media. There is no way to view the files to be certain they made it... However, it has been earning my trust... So far it has never let me down.
