Motion blur induced into your background while maintaining a clear subject is not the same thing as camera shake, and it does not appear the same in your images. And that kind of panning is not normally done in light, or at shutter speeds, that will require IS.

I think my hands are only average in steadiness, but I have rarely, if ever, noticed feeling tired from handholding. If I did I'd use a monopod or a tripod. My Sigma is 2.8 lbs compared to the 3.2 lbs of the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS.

A lot of people are convinced that only the most expensive white lenses from Canon are appropriate for certain types of shooting. Canon has been working hard for a long time to get people to think that way. So if that's what you think, then go ahead and buy the big white glass and shoot your heart out. I hope all your images are as clear as can be.

Yep, coolhar is absolutely correct....and sorry but thatcloudthere is mistaken about the sports photography thing.

I generally use the IS on #2 on my 100-400mm L when shooting fast action, back and forth games, ie. Soccer, Football. I am limited to horizontal shooting, but these are horizontal games, unlike basketball, bmx ect..

The IS does work in low light, but generally, I don't use it in low light.

The long and short of it is it won't fix subject motion blur and yet in low light you may well need slower shutter speeds at high zoom and have a better chance of hand-holding those speeds. I don't often take a tripod to bands playing, so it makes a difference.

Plus, it is a totally redesigned lens isn't it?

Hey Petrakka - try tracking a horse at a dead run in a average lit arena - you be real surprised at what IS can do for you !

Here are a couple of shots taken with my Sigma 70-200. Both are ISO 1600 and therefore took a little more processing than I like to do. But I think they turned out ok considering the light at this high school field.
