I would never dream of assuming that I had heard of every magazine in the UK, not even 10% of them to be honest, let alone those around the rest of the world!

Of course, some would look it up in search engines. I mean, dont they realize that not all magazines are featured on the internet? Like my old school magazine, my club magazine.... I guess there are some very serious photographers out there. :)

I did google some - not to see if they were real but to see if I could get a feel for kind of subject matter. Sometimes it gave me insight into what the photog was trying to capture.
But I went on the honour system and assumed all titles exist somewhere in the world. If someone cheated I think it's his/ her loss.
The "I've never heard of it" comments just made me laugh!
I'm not bothered as much as I am curious, and a little flattered that someone couldn't figure it out, but mostly surprised. Seemed pretty straight forward to me : )
I can tell you EXACTLY why (though it wasn't me that DQ'd requested it) - the blur is in a strange shape. The head looks all sharp and as you look at it like maybe down his neck is sharp, but then there's a weird blur on the rest, almost like a tiny zoom blur, but his head is perfect. I would guess that is why.
This gallery at pBase has my original entry, two versions of a mock-up cover, and a sample cover of the "real" magazine. I'm curious whether seeing the layout would have made any difference in how people look at/evaluate a photo like this, which has a specific purpose.
Not all magazines are looking for the spectacular action or nature shot -- those might not be appropriate. I see a possible "problem" where people are judging the photo on its intrinsic charactaristics rather its than suitability for a particular publication.
i got one "Never heard of this magazine" comment for my "real simple" entry... there was another entry for the same magazine and i went and checked the comments on it, too: sure enough there was exact same comment from exact same person... now, how could that be? if the person commented "Never heard of this magazine" while voting on my picture how could he possibly say the same thing when he came to another one? and visa versa...................
At the book store the other day, I went to the magazine aisle and started counting magazines. I gave up after a while--there were a lot! And these are just the main stream ones. I did notice one thing though, I didn't see any magazines with B/W covers. Not one. I suppose that there are some, though. There has to be; there are so many magazines out there!

In Sweden we often have b&w covers on artist/photography/actors ... magazines.

Ya, you'd think by the time they got to the second cover for "Real Simple" they'd at least have 'heard' of it. Short term memory loss? Really, there are people here (dpc) from divergent lifestyles and all over the globe. A few aliens, probably, too. It's so egocentric for a person to believe that because they've not heard of a publication it doesn't exist. Its akin to sticking one's head in the sand and denying the existence of anything but self.
