OK, I have to stand up for one of the most useful tools that everyone always seems to trash: onboard flash.
"Never use it." "Avoid it like the plague." "The most useless thing since unsliced bread."
To all y'all I say rubbish.
Onboard flash is actually EXTREMELY useful -- but like any other aspect of your camera, you have to know how to use it (and abuse it). From using it for fill to shooting in the dark, if you know how to use it, you can take pictures where it isn't readily obvious you didn't use a big expensive light set-up.
If you can, try changing the setting that tells the flash how bright to be. Or cover it with some paper and let the flash burst through. Or set up a funny little piece of card and make the flash bounce off the card onto the ceiling (I've always wanted to try that with a piece of foil to increase the reflectivity). Anybody have any other low tech tips for onboard flash?
You can use your onboard flash and not leave all those annoying tell-tales like over-exposure, harsh shadows behind the subject, red-eye, etc etc etc -- you just have to learn how -- LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN PHOTOGRAPHY. Don't throw it away just because someone tells you to and because you can't seem to make it work. EXPERIMENT!!!
