Hey, everybody! As you know, I just started with this digital photography thing a few months ago, and I just now started taking pictures that aren't required for the challenges.
I'll comment for you. I like the composition of both, especially the first one, but think they could both stand to have the contrast adjusted a bit as they are fairly drab, at least on my monitor. Do you have the seal shot in color or did you take this in B&W? I'd be interested in seeing that. I also find the yellow border a bit distracting...it makes me want to look at the border instead of the photo. Good job on both, though, and nice selection of shots.
dunno about anyone else but i like both quite a bit, particularly the first .. i find it quite emotive and the low contrast high key is artistic to me. the other is technically well, and an item of medium visual interest to me ; it derives the majority of it's interest from the sharp focus and textures, but to me, lacks a great deal of emotive punch.

I quite like them both. I am usually a high-contrast shooter, but I, too, like the softer look on the seal. The valve, however, I think could do with a bit of pop on the contrast.

Good... at least I'm not alone! :-) I, too, thought the yellow border worked quite well-- in fact, I was considering imitating it on some shots I'm playing with right now.
