I had brought up this suggestion a few days back but did not get much response. I am mentioning it again because I think it would be an improvement to the current 'commenting' system. In the example below, you (the person receiving the comments) would be able to submit a 'one time' response to a given critique or comment. This organized exchange would only be visible to you.... (until the challenge ends)....then visible for all to see and possibly learn from. The crude example below is how I envisioned it:
Not to be terse, but why should I care if there was a sign to the right preventing a wider crop? What do you expect to gain by me knowing that? Seems like a tool to pander for a better score. If need be, you can currently send an email/private note and provide setup detail after the vote.

Please don't take my poor examples of dialog to seriously, real life examples would prove to be more valid I am sure. Also... It would be hard to 'pander for a better score' since you would not see the results until AFTER the challenge was over.

On many occasions, after reading some comments ppl placed on my photo, I'd really like to reply, but that would reveal my identity, and thus makes the voting not-so-fair. I like your idea of an anonymous reply field DURING voting, and be revealed AFTER voting ends. But I figure this will cost some coding for the webmaster here.
