I've had a couple of questions about my picture this challenge. The writers left their names so I could contact them.

However, I'm not sure that doing so during the challenge is for the best. I feel like at that point it becomes sort of selling the picture. I would like it judged by what you see. At the same time the temptation to get a possible boost in score, sure is tempting.

So what to do all of you do? Do you answer questions about your picture during the challenge? And... Why or why not?

I was just about to do so, but I think for the second time. I usually don't even read my comments during the vote -- I try to wait until there are at least 10 comments so I don't over-react to one off-the wall note.
If they ask a specific question and leave their name, it is fine to contact them, or not. They may/may not change their vote (probably not) and I myself might ask them not to, but even if they did it shouldn't affect things significantly. Mostly, I think it's a good idea to respond to all the comments, if for no other reason that you have to actually read them...

Once in a while I ask if I'm not sure what the picture is. It may be a good, really good picture, but by my not knowing what it is I am having trouble telling if it fits the challenge I will ask a question. Some times this may mean as much as 2 to 3 points. Especially if it is a good picture. Maybe I'm just not understanding their angle or something. It means a lot to me for them to answer, Some one told me it's not life or death here, and I know that. But I do like to be fair and to give constructive criticism that can be of benefit to them. Yes I really enjoy this very much but I also want to learn as much as I can while I'm enjoying myself. I'm just an ameture (or however you spell it) photographer even though I've been doing it for 40+ years. I've only taken pictures or photos before now. I'm learning so much here and want to learn as much about critiquing also. You all are so good at taking and at critiquing these.. Remember that at one time you had to start somewhere also and be a beginner.

the photos i have the hardest time judging are the ones that i feel are really good photos but do not meet the challenge (as i interpret its intent to be). i usually then comment on why i don't think it meets the challenge, then move on to commenting on the technical and compositional side of the picture.

i'm hoping this is a good compromise. i feel strongly that meeting the challenge is an important part here, but i do want to give feedback on the picture not just within the constraints of the challenge, even though i rate it within the constraints of the challenge.

i personally don't change my rating based on the feedback i get from the photographer during the week ... even if i 'get' the picture better, it obviously wasn't standing on it's own, at least for me, and that should be reflected in my rating.

just my way of doing things ...
