The body shape (long/slender), resting wing position (vertical like a butterfly), and eye separation (very wide apart) all indicate this is a damselfly. The only damselfly with such wings is the Black-Winged or Ebony Jewelwing damselfly (Calopteryx maculata); this one is probably female (white spots). It's fairly unusual to find one with its aft wings horizontal like this; it's a great shot.
While the term dragonfly can be used to describe anything in Odonata, it's usually reserved for a particular suborder, just as the damselfly is a suborder of Odonata. |
