I am thinking about adding this lens to my collection. With all of the macro stuff here I was hoping for some opinions on this lens. Its going to be used on my 10-D. Any thoughts?
I don't have that lens but I researched it big time. It's super sharp and very well reviewed. Gordon and Achiral have that lens so I'm sure they'll tell you that it rocks.
I bought the Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX Macro. It's a very similar lens and equally well reviewed and sharp. I went with the Sigma because I got a deal on E-Bay.
Yes, the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is an ok lens. It is sharp and goes to 1:1 and the price isn’t too high. You won’t go wrong buying it for macro work. It is the best compromise between the four macro lenses that Canon makes.
Its a good lens for macro work. I can't speak about it comparision to the other Canon macro lenses, but I chose it over the 50mm macro because of the increased working distance and chose it over higher magnification lenses because of the types of photography I was interested in exploring with it.
I also picked the 100mm range to use as an alternative prime portrait lens length, to compliment the 70-200F4l which I use for that purpose. It fitted in quite well with my exisiting purchases and the price I was prepared to pay.
I have the MT-24EX and it is an awesome flash with extreme flexibility but the price is also high. I actually am able to get very pleasing results using my 420EX. I would start out with the 550EX that you already have and see how you do with it before spending the big bucks on the MR-14 or MT-24. If I was going to decide between the two macro flashes I would definitely go for the MT-24EX over the ring light, there is just a lot more you can do with it.
I plan on using my 550. As getting the 100 2.8 past accounting is going to be hard enough never mind adding in the 24Ex lol Ahh well I guess I will just have to be extra nice for a while lol
Actually I am much happier with the 550 on my 10D then I was with the d30. It seems to work much better with the newer camera then it did with the d30.
