The purpose of this discussion is to determine if it would be beneficial and acceptable to request a rule change to allow the use of dodging and burning on our challenge photographs. Dodging and burning is a very common darkroom technique that film photographers use to make adjustments to their photographs.
The proposal is that we ask that the dodge/burn tools be added to the acceptable image modification rules.
Question to you: Do you believe this type of modification should or should not be allowed on dpchallenge contest entries? Please feel free to add any explanation to your answer...
Yes I feel it is a viable tool for digital photography contests. There are plenty of times that an area could be enhanced by using either of these tools to provide a better final photograph.
Should be allowed. Although I know what it is and its use in film photography, I have no experinece using it digitally. I really wanna learn and master this technique, its something that will help me finish off my photos.
I can see people who don't know how to use it either making a bad image even worse or worst yet, becoming discouraged because they can't get the results that they had hoped. If they do allow spot editting of any sort, again I have got to stress that there needs to be a limit set(either percentage of image or number of pixels).

If so, then the wording should be more general, allowing the technique, not just the tools. If not, then the wording seems fine and should retain the specific reference to the "dodge and burn tools".
Without a doubt. It is a method of working with light which photography is all about. One reason is that with dodging and burning you are able to correct or enhance areas in a photo to more closely match what was seen in real life but limited in the digital capture due to the sensor's narrower exposure range. It goes hand in hand with exposure tools such as Levels.

What version are you using? I tried that and 7.02 isn't coming up with anything unless it is a brush plug in that I don't have, which is possible but it isn't bringing anything up through help for "dodge" or "burn"

I'm terrible at it. I want the opportunity within dpc to learn. Yes I can do it in other situations or for other web sites. But this is where I do the majority of my learning and improving type photography. Its the area were I tend to be pushed to do the really best I can.
