You do have a flash exposure compensation in the menu. Menu/SMenu/go to the 2nd page/Speedlight Options/Variable Power/then can adjust -2 to +2. This is not like the normal flash and compensates the shutter speed. So if you are shooting manually, shutter, or aperture priority (even full auto), you may have to compensate for the flash. IE: you have aperture priority at 2.8 and the shutter speed is showing 1 sec for a lowlight...the flash will fire and act pretty much as a fill/freeze. I have noticed that when on regular flash or red eye (in aperure/shutter/auto), the camera sets the shutter speed at 1/30-1/60th.
Hope that is not too confusing.
Definitely a tripod helps, or a sandbag, or better yet (cheap) old sock filled with rice. It is long and able to shape it to fit many situations. The shutter release is great! But, if you are rolling/winding up the cord, it can stretch the wire and come apart like mine did...so I have to buy a new one. No warranty on that apparently!
