While I don't encourage blasting people who give negative comments, I don't see a problem with messaging someone who gives you a comment during the challenge. I have sent messages to explain a question that was asked in a comment, or to request a more in depth explanation of a comment before.
This only effects a small portion of the votes in a contest (hardly ever would this involve more than 2 or 3 voters), and it is unlikely to create any significant change in the scoring at all.
While revealing your submission to a broad group of people is clearly unacceptable, I don't think we need to pretend that the scores in this contest are of such an extreme importance that we cannot afford to reveal our identity to a few people in order to better explain or understand the photography involved.
As for specifically berating negative comments, I recieved a message of that nature a while back. In responce, I greatly expanded my comment on the shot to further explain my score, but I didn't feel at all compelled to change the score itself.
