Are the ones you prefer called "precise mousing surface" or something like that? Ever seen the ones that peel and stick right on your desktop? They don't have a foam rubber core, just the plastic surface. They are really cool.
The ones I like just have a layer of fabric on the top rather than a layer of shiney plastic, I dunno what they're called :P
Yeh my friend has one of those peely ones, hehe, they seem to stick to my mouse tho, and my mouse skids on the plastic ones, so thats why I like the fabric ones best. I could always just get a trackerball mouse I suppose :)
If you do a lot of mousing you should DEFINITELY get a trackball to prevent repetitive motion disease, particularly of the elbow and shoulder (details on request).
If you do any masking or photo retouching please buy a tablet/stylus combo -- even the really small Wacom tablets make that job SO much easier.

Well, I find that those flat mats you move your finger on, and trackballs, both make my arm hurt far worse than a well-designed ergonomic mouse set up so I don't have to move it more than three inches in any direction to move all the way across my screen. Your Ergonomics May Vary.

Of course, even a really small Wacom tablet is easily ten times the cost of a mouse. :-> But, for those who can afford Photoshop, a Wacom is a reasonable extra cost, I will agree.
Hmm, I dont really move my elbow much when I use the mouse, more just my wrist, and i dont think i move my shoulder at all. I have been thinking about getting a wacom tab tho, but the good ones are quite pricey.
