hey guys, I recently purchased a viewsonic VP191b LCD monitor. I need help calibrating it so that it's perfect for photography and doesn't hurt my eyes. Any suggestions?

A spider is most precise -- if absolute precision is required, but this will get you close -- Monitor Calibration

If your monitor is hurting your eyes -- put something white on the screen and look to the side or it, focusing on whatever is behind the monitor (a wall for me). If you can see the screen flicker while doing this you need a higher refresh rate. Generally anything over 70 is good, but some people are more sensitive to it than others.

I can't calibrate by eye. Every time I try, I end up tweaking it one way, then the other, and never get what I want. So I bought a calibration device.

Adorama has the Gretag Macbeth eye one for $65. Even though its not the latest and greatest, it still works great, and is much more affordable than the eye two.
