I might as well just put this in rant to begin with...but President Chavez of Venezuela had some very serious words to say about the USA amid his convictions that the Americans want to wage war with Cuba and possibly Venezuela.
How much do you feel the cold war has thawed? What's left of it?
The focus of war (from an Ameri- and Eurocentric point of view) seems to have shifted from "capitalism vs. socialism" to "peaceful people vs. terrorists"...
Is this the same war? Is the USA still planning on fighting old allies of the USSR? I mean, North Korea must have people worried...China as well...what about Cuba? What about Venezuela?
Do I think that the "war on terror" is just the cold war re-invented? Well, yes in the sense that its difficult to say if there are any tangible, imminent threats, and NO because isn't a cold war one without action?
Maybe not directly but I'm sure if you ask the Cubans, Koreans, Vietnamese, Serbs, Croats, Cambodians, Nicaraguans, etc. they will tell you there was plenty of action!
Not to mention El Salvador, Panama, Germany, Egypt, and on and on!
The "cold war" was only cold from the perspective of the two global, nuclear superpowers of the time, USA and USSR, who studiously avoided fighting each other directly, while backing up what they considered to be allied regimes either covertly or overtly, and many times directly meddling in the conflicts of those regimes. It's worth noting, for instance, that the Vietnam war began as one of these cold war hotspots with USA taking over for France in shoring up a corrupt-but-non-communist regime when communist-backed Vietnamese factions were threatening to take over the entire country.
THAT war, of course, escalated into a "hot" war running right alongside the broader, "cold" war.
And of course there was (and is, I suppose) the Korean War...
