Need some info about the acuracy of the trackball mice verses the optical mice.I know that they are both optical,but is the trackball more precise than the other?Any input appreciated. Bill.
It has super-precise control, excellent for both Photoshop and the most demanding of twitch games, and has two extra buttons in addition to a very responsive mouse wheel.
In all honesty I haven't use a trackball recently, but I live in a house with very picky Quake 3 players and everyone has an Intellimouse, as well as a drawer of older, less satisfactory mice that no longer make the grade.

That or the logitech optical mice are also very good.
I believe there is a natural difference between a trackball mouse and a regular mouse.
Trackball mice are ment to be used mostly for business and for places with very limited desk space. You use them by moving the ball using your thumb which gives your thumb a nice workout but you don't have to move the trackball physically at all. This is convenient but I have not used these for an extended period of time and found them somewhat akward to use.
However, if you're doing photo editing your best bet is probably a graphics tablet like a wacom. They are pressure sensitive and VERY comfortable to work with. Very much like doing freehanded drawing. I love mine even though it has limited use.
Gamers demand a lot more out of mice than most other computer users, and the latest batch of Logitech mice (a few of which are now sitting in the previously mentioned drawer of not-as-nice mice) didn't hold a candle to the Intellimouse Optical when it comes to tracking speed. You can easily confuse a Logitech mouse with a lot of rapid, twitchy motion in different directions, but the Intellimouse takes it like a champ, never missing a beat.
The Logitech mice are much more attractive, however, and I use my old one at work where the mousing around is less punishing. They are a bit cheaper too, and probably decent enough for photo editing, but if you want the pinnacle in accuracy Microsoft is the way to go.
I'm not a fan of the MS Intellimouse, mostly due to their contours, but I definitely can recommend the MS Optical Mouse, which has a nicer shape, and costs about half as much - great for both gaming and graphics.

Oh yeah - that was the reason I picked the logitech optical - wasn't 'contoured' for a right handed person - I hate those sorts of mice, but only because I'm left handed.
