Depending on the setup you can get very good pictures using this method. I went to a presentation about this very subject on the weekend at the local Aviation museum. The pictures shown were of the remnants of a tropical forest above the arctic circle.
There's also a link for do-it-yourselfers to build a contraption with a single use camera and a kite.
The one the presenter used is a small point and shoot Olympus film camera, operated by remote control to change the angle. Part of the remote control was a video screen so he could see what the camera was seeing. All in all, very interesting.
