I received a few e-mails asking how I did my Primary Glass shot; more specifically, how I eliminated the glare. I'm too lazy to do a tutorial so I'll post it here.

I went crazy trying to figure out how to reduce the glare. This is what I would get:

The key to the problem was to light the background. This set up finally did the trick:

As you can see, the set is really basic. In fact, it looks like heck. You need to learn how to visualise how the shot will look like, by eliminating all the surrounding clutter. Looking through the eye piece or LCD helps accomplish this goal.

This was my image before processing it through Photoshop 7 (2.5 megs).

I played with Levels to brighten up the colors, plus I boosted the saturation through the hue/saturation function.

I'll be happy to answer any other specific questions.

P.S. Thanks to Lisa (Froober) for helping me "see the light". She had recommended using my computer monitor for back lighting to get the same effect. I used that concept as the basis of my lighting scheme for my shot.

Question:

On the original primary glass shot, would there have been a way to expose it so that the original shot was closer to the finished brightness level you were looking for? This could have eliminated some of the level adjustments possibly...

Thanks for the mini tutorial. Interesting to see the difference between the setup and finished product. I always assumed it was just the setup for my shots which looked a mess, and that everybody else's looked perfect - just like their pictures :-)

I'll remember that backlighting tip.

Great shot, BTW.

You think that's a mess??? One of these days I'll take a shot of one of my setups ; )
