My immediate reaction would be to prefer the second, for reasons I cannot completely analyze. However, it would be an easier task to judge if they were on the same page, allowing for more direct comparison.
I like the one where you can see the river, and here is why. It looks like a foggy (overcast)day in the distance, and the sky is a little blown out, and the building doesn't add additional color to the sky. It is a bit dull on it's own. The river adds some darkness with the trees, and also gives us a bit more to look at than just a blown out sky and a dull colored top of a building. I personally think that the river, trees, and town add some color/darkness, to help balence the upper half of the shot. I'll add that I don't think the photo or the scene are dull...just the colors in the upper half. I really like the shot, and the guy in the foreground adds to the feeling that it's kind of a distance to the building and river as he seems to have a dreamy kind of stare into the scenery below. At yet another glance, I think that I like how in the shot without the river, his body is covering up the houses to the right, and almost wish to have those buildings removed from the shot somehow, as I think it might make the river shot a bit less busy, and still balence out the bright top, with some darkness. I think it's because of the horizon. I'm quite a bit taller (1m95cm) than the person you see on the picture (small Chinese drummer)so his head is below my horizon. If I had taken the picture from a lower point of view, his head would have been just above the horizon. I used my 35mm for this one so the only way I could do this and see what I was doing is by kneeling down. But I think the guy would have been wondering why I was photographing his ass.
This would have been good for your part of the world challenge. I like the modified one the best, but if you could have brought the camera a little higher so you could get the whole building and not just part of the red doors. That would have been great. Where was the picture taken? Is the cloths he is wearing what they usually wear? It is neat to see different fashions from around the world.

Oh wow! It looked like a river to me for some reason. Just don't listen to me. LOL I think I still like it better though. Hope I didn't offend with my statements. Both photos are very nice. I think I need to go to bed now. lol By the way, I saw your panda bear photo on the main page at photosig, that is a very beautiful shot. You do very nice work. ~Heather~
1. Better sense of scale to the whole pic. 2. The wet parking lot, explainds the haze/fog/blur around the temple. 3. The closer un-blurred objects make the photo look more crisp. To my eyes, it has more "pop".
