The EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a very good zoom for everyday use and does have "macro" capability. IS is very useful, USM is the ring type wiht FTM (full time manual) focusing and is very fast and quiet. The lens is also reasonably priced.
I've got the canon ef 75-300mm 4-5.6 IS and love it. I know there are a few others on dpc with the same lens that are also quite pleased with it. All of the photos herewere taken with that lens...first few times using the camera.
I didn't know that lens had macro capability? Mine doesn't. :)

It isn't macro like you have on a macro lens. The 75-300 III that I had did have a macro symbol on it but I agree with Dave that a set of tubes might be worth getting if you want to do macro. The 75-300 is not at all a bad lens and it is a great zoom range. You can pick them up for very little money. Check out www.keh.com they have a ton of used ones.

Well glory be...nor does mine!! My bad. But...I'd still recommend it for the zoom part of the equation. I'll have to try a few macros with it and see what happens.

except for the max aperture, you cannot go wrong with the EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM , I have it and a lot of peole have it and are very happy with it. it is not really macro per se but with the cropping factor you get very nice stuff. And the IS thing does work fine. Anyhow, there is almost no true (1:1) macro zoom (one nikon only I think) but with the 1.6 factor .. you can be close to that.
My next lens planned might be the ef 75-300mm 4-5.6 IS. I read very good stuf about it ( the recent one, you might avoid buying a 'old' one on ebay.

I have to say that the 28-135mm IS lens is a very good, all around lens. I bought it and I love it. You won't get the same close-ups as you wold get with a macro lens, however you can get pretty close.
