I've had a few comments on my current challenge entry that the sky is overexposed.

I'd like to point out that we're not all lucky enough to live in an area with perfect blue photogenic skies. If the sky in my picture is white, it could well be that it was actually like that.

When rating pictures, please bear in mind that entries come from all around the world from places with different weather patterns.

if your sky is cloudy, take the shot at night. ;)

Seriously, though... a white sky is no excuse for a blown out photograph, you just have to work with it differently, darken the exposure, or exclude it entirely for something else, like the wall of a building.

They're not saying your sky is white, they're saying it's overexposed and that the picture suffers from it.

I feel your pain - I live in the midlands of England and the sky is rarely a photogenic blue around here. But Mousie is right - there is a difference between a white sky and an overexposed sky. Most cameras seem to have a hard time with the white ones, though and getting a correct exposure in these conditions can be *very* difficult. You may need to be prepared to knock your exposure compensation down a couple of notches.

Actually, Tim has a point here. I have received many comments over several photos that had grey skies that were not blown out. Theses skies were simply a dull grey/offwhite.

As a matter of fact...look at a lot of professional shots of various things where the sky is not the key ingredient of the photo but simply a background and you will find plenty of grey/offwhite skies.

Like Abbott's Stone and Williams Streets

or Alfred Steiglitz's Apples and Gable

White skies does not always mean blown out or bad.
