I really enjoyed the shot I've entered for the fantasy challenge:
but can any1 explain Y did it do SOOOO bad?
I mean, bugs bunny is not jumping behind the lil' jap fellow on the shot, neither is Jennifer Lopez striping in the background, but is that something you see on a daily basis, a person dressed on traditional japanese costume!?
Can any1 comment or explain it to me (just for the sake of the low votes).
Not complaining, aight, I mean I loved this shot, just trying to figure out why did it do so baaaaaaad
I don't think that it probably came across to most viewers as otherworldly or something you would see out of a fairy tale (which I believe is the interpretation most voters used - regardless of whether or not that is actually what the challenge topic of "fantasy world" stated).
No fantasy there. Go to a martial arts studio. Visit Japan. It's not something not of this world. Hey, while you're at it, throw my picture up for evaluation. I would love the extra exposure. ;^)

Here goes...
Generally speaking lighting, use of shallow depth of field and color OK. General image quality is average.
Many reviewers will not find a strong connection of your subject with the challenge topic and will vote it lower because of it. They will feel this is not really a fantasy world, but rather nothing more than an image of non-western culture. The viewer is not engaged to wonder what the subject is doing or why he is holding tree branches.
But most of the issues with this image are of a technical nature...
The picture is taken from a 'snapshot' perspective. Different perspectives like ground level looking up, some other extreme angle or while in motion would add more visual interest to the composition. This perspective is closer to what you might expect to see in a photo album and not a fantasy challenge.
Though not overexposed greatly you might consider burning in some detail on your subject's bright white garments. This is particularly true of the feet and upper left shoulder where detail is lost. Judicious burning on the rest of the garment would give it depth and added eye appeal.
The tree on the left of your subject should be positioned further to the left. Having the edge just touching your subject draws the eye away from him and acts as a major distraction. It is made worse by the fact there are digital 'jaggies' clearly visible on the sharp border between tree and garment. Another distraction is the bright white area on the lower left side of the tree.
Even considering the fact that your subject is Japanese it will appear to most reviewers that his eyes are closed and they will vote it lower because of it.

Can you explain YOUR pic then? Why did you think it would be a "fantasy world" to have guns on a trash can!? Same deal huh!
U might see that in a farm somewhere, where no1 has any use for the weapons, and simply, throw them away!
Hey! You looked! Cool...one more view on that pic. He-he. ;^)

Actually, I didn't! It's cz I can see the thumbnail for it (and I also remember it from the challenge), ur pic was placed 2 positions under mine, can see it on the same screen!
The guy is just there in the shot nothing more, I zeroed right in on the closed eyes and could tell the fellow knew the shot was coming and put on what he thought to be his picture face... leading to the snapish feel. When taking pictures of people that are not used to having their picture taken (or have some preconceived idea of what they want they believe is a nice expression) the expressions become forced and facial features become distorted.
What I do is pop of a few shots with them with their prefered expression and then telll them ok I am done, but pop off a few more shots as they relax. The aftershots more times than not are more candid natural feeling.
As far as fantasy world here in San Diego we are inadated with culture that nothing is out of this world anymore. Maybe a Samuri would have been closer to fanasty for this type shot.
Scuds, you have nothing to complain about. All fantasy worlds start with imagination and look what they did to mine. second to last place???? Your score was way better than mine. The voters only want main stream. How shallow. They don't seem to have the ability to make anything other than an obvious connection.

That's what I meant when I posted the leaf shot for comparison!

disclainer: I did not even have a good enough idea to enter.
neophyte: My problem with yours was, if you don't read the title, you get absolutely no sense of fantasy from this pic. There is a large contingent, which I am a part of, that feel your shot should stand on it's own without a title.
scuds: This shot is great, but doesn't portray fantasy to the average viewer. If it means fantasy to you, awesome!, but you entered a contest voted on by the average person and your shot didn't scream fantasy to them, so you got a lower score. It's the nature of these competitions. You did not accomplish the challenges goal of creating a beautiful image where the theme is obvious. You did however create a beautiful shot.

Sorry you or the "large contingent" didn't make the connection. That's my point. The fantasy was there. Sorry you had to look too hard or didn't see it.
So your point is that you didn't effectively communicate your vision of the challenge to a voting audience you know is "main stream" and "shallow"? I would agree.

absolutely. My bad.....touche'. It still didn't deserve 2nd to last. (which is more my point) I'm Sorry you admit to being part of this "main stream and shallow group" I've looked at your profile and your work would lead me to believe otherwise. But from the horse's mouth...."There is a large contingent, which I am a part of," Your words... not mine.

It really feels so bad huh!
If only ur shot, or mine was placed at the last position, I wouldn't feel so bad, so many ppl go after the "brown", and damn, not even that I can accomplish! LoL
The whole quote reads as follows: "There is a large contingent, which I am a part of, that feel your shot should stand on it's own without a title."
Sorry that it bothers you that I feel that the challenge is in the photography, not the title creation. I would love to see no titles at all and have voting simply on the merits of the photograph. Your title shouldn't be the deal-breaker as to whether someone "gets it". At least this is my opinion.
Please take no offense at my comments here. You can't always win. I have more misses than hits in my photography. Also, just because I have the ability to point out percieved problems in a shot or have a definite opinion about images, in no way means I could necessarily do better. Voters spend probably less than 10-15 seconds looking at each image. I no there are those out there that spend much more, and usually that's where the good, constructive comments come from. First impressions are everything in a shotgun voting approach like this.
