Hi all, I'm a rather new member to DPC, but there's something I'd like to point out. It's that challenge submission form on this website. Is it really crucial for members to provide information like Aperture, ISO setting and Exposure time? I mean, to the average point-and-shooter, this makes not much sense at all. Isn't the final output of the photo more important than having to track these? These info aren't even posted beside our submissions, so what's the point?
I mean, does a good writer really needs to know how his typewriter works, or what ink he used on his printer to create a good novel? Does the reader needs to know?
My suggestion to the site is, why not make that 3 fields OPTIONAL instead? Means it's up to the photographer whether to submit those info or not. Because for the average-Joe (like yours truly here) I dont care so much, it's the captured photo that counts!
actually those fields are optional ... people can include that information so when people critique and comment after the challenge (ie the Critique Club) they can get more info on how the image was created ... all that is really mandetory is when the photo was taken because you have to take it during challenge dates and the location of the exposure helps to understand how certain photos are taken because this site is world wide ... hopefully that helps a little :)
Welcome to DPC. Those fields are optional, as Ayme said, to bypass them all you need to do is type N/A or something like that.
As a member of the CC, though, this information is extrememly helpful when trying to determine what "advice" or opinion to give. Before CC, though, I found it useful when studying others photography in an effort to better my own. I agree that the end result is what matters, but sometimes knowing how you got there may help someone else. No, I wouldn't want to know the type of ink an author used, but if I really liked his style, I may want to know the process he used, so that I can emulate it until I learn enough to do it my way. Does that make sense?
Ayme, it wasn't stated anywhere on the submission form about these values being "optional". That's why I (and many others?) have always thought it was mandatory to have those values. Are you sure about this? It's hard for me to tell my other point-and-shooting friends about this field being optional without concrete proof! :) Hey Mr Webmaster, pls help!
shadow ... all is good ... i've been with the site for over a year ... and all of the fields are optional .. i'm sure if Drew or Langdon jumps on they will let you know as well ... have fun shooting and submitting :)
Hi, I'm Ayme's echo today. I found out Monday they are optional because my students use a point and shoot with lame-o software, and we have no way of knowing the EXIF data anyway. :-)
If you don't include it, don't check the box for an in depth critique, however.
Really? Is that why I never get a critque?
No, but if I get the picture, I'm more likely to spend a heck of a lot less time on it. Same with N/A in the details. Why bother spending my 20 mins if they took 1 second to check the box, but couldn't take 30 seconds to type in their intent, tech details or something?
