As this was my first challenge I would appreciate some feedback on my entry of "My Corner of the World" - Big D. Did ANYONE see the orange, red and golds around the Dallas Skyline in my entry. Please understand that I'm not complaining just needing feedback. I may have just learned that subtle colors are not something to include in a submission and need verification. Also, if anyone takes the time to take a peek at the photo would you try it without room lights to see if they (the colors I mentioned) are there on your monitor. I may have to resort to only the primaries on my next submission 8>)
Hi, Seeker. Yes, I saw the colours. Trouble is, for me at least, it wasn't a very exciting or even interesting shot of the city. I scored it a 6 which was a little above the average it received.
I gave it a 6 because it did not excite me. don't get me wrong, it's a good photo but Some of the problems I see with it is the fact that you're so far away from the subject that it gets drowned in the negative space. If you were maybe half the distance from when you took the shot that would probably improve your score (at least with me).
Seeker, I could see the colours, but I gave it 5. Most people get a bit surprised at the reaction to their first few photos, but after a while you will realise that there are certain types of photos that do well here, and they aren't necessarily the kind you personally prefer. It's just the way it goes :/
One thing you should do is post process your photos a bit to accentuate the colours that you want people to see. Here is what happened when I opened your photo in the Gimp, and did nothing other than hit the auto button in the levels adjustment dialogue:
I gave it a 7 precisely because of the colors so at least one person appreciated the effort but there were some killer skylines in the contest and it didn't fully work for me in that capacity. I agree that a closer shot would have worked a lot better.
Lisae - thanks for the pointer. I'm a little hesitant to "tinker" with the image since I'm trying to make myself take a better initial shot. The changes you did work very well on the image on some of the lesser monitors I have access to at work so I just learned something important, thanks.
Axxon - unfortunately this is as close as I could get, physically and photographically. Any closer and I'd have been in the lake and that was max zoom on the F707. I was hoping for more of a soft color, hard skyline, soft lake color depth to the image like in Lisae's redo. Sigh. . . it's all part of the learning curve.
