Lots of digital cameras are capable of taking infrared shots.
A simple way to check if your camera is capable of taking infrared pictures is by taking any remote control (tv for example), aiming it at the lens of your camera, and pressing any button. If in the preview window you can actually see a light flashing quickly when you press buttons, then your camera can do it!
You will need an infrared filter. Not a dark red infrared filter for B&W infrared film, but a filter that actually removes most of the visual spectrum of light. It looks jet black to the eye, and comes in different intensities.
If you do not have a lens adapter, you can hold a filter up to the lens while being extremely careful not to move the camera... these shots generally require really long exposures.... or construct a makeshift filter holder for your camera.
