(not seeking for a solution, just need to write something down)
I am so freaking frustrated right now.
This brother of mine has managed to get his pc infected for the XXXth time. Hey, it ain't working properly. VIRUS VIRUS VIRUS!

I keep fixing his pc, but this time there is stuff on it of which I can't find the roots. It is dead slow, runs strange processes. I understoof Win98 pretty good, but I sure as hell avoid fixing XP because I don't have a clue what stuff does.
It's got spyware killers, Hijackthis (removal tool), virusscanner, firewall, me editing the register/msconfig/ini's etc etc.
I told him a zillion time to avoid porn pages, to not open "hey look this is fun" attachements even if they are from friends, to avoid funny movies and exe's, there is no such thing as free content, magical free mp3's etc etc etc.
But he keeps getting his PC infected with viri, strange programs. Worked for two hours on it this evening. I'm getting so sick of ignorant stubborn ******* like my brother (and I told him so).
What goes on in these people's mind? Why don't they listen? Free porn, where!? Oh, the last ten funny exe's got me infected, I BET the eleventh is free from shit! Huh, huh, John always sents funny stuff (does he really or is John that ****friend who manages to **** up his pc just as easy as you do!?
A dozen other people I support and told the same things manage to stay absolutely crap free. Next time he shall have to bring it to a paid expert. Perhaps some $$$ going from his wallet to someone else might have a magic effect on his brain.

Some people just don't get it no matter how many times you tell them. I had a co-worker come into my office recently and ask if my mouse was working OK. She said her mouse was acting funny, so she wanted to see if mine was infected by the same virus.

Some people just can't help it. They are virus-sticky. They don't listen, don't understand, and... they have you.

I feel your pain...I spent 4 hours the other night fixing a friend computer cause it had some porn thing (they truly didn't install this thing) that would dial the modem at odd hours...luckly they have 900 number block on their phone so it wouldn't connect. I think I fixed that one but found tons more. I finally left and told him to watch the computer to see what else comes up.

So now you have setup some mousetraps in case it goes wild?
Having an online backup that automatically backs up at regular intervals (eg daily)would help solve this as you could download a clean copy of your files after using a virus killer.

In Holland one of the telephone cable companies warns people for irregular behaviour on their line(s). So if you never call to Barbados and suddenly there is a Barbados spike in connections or duration they will inform you. And fast too. I think they do it because many people cannot pay the bill, so in the end the company got a lot of bad debt. Heard from a relative the other day, only cost him 50 bucks before the company warned him. Long distance redialers are something to watch out for as well. It's not all 0900.

Firstly, sympathy hugs. We look after my parents' PC and I feel your pain though I can see that your brother is in a league of his own. My parents are pretty good, considering his actions!
Secondly, I think you actually NEED to stick to your guns on what you have said above... he doesn't have any real motivation to listen if you keep bailing him out and he's taking advantage of you way too much if this is such a repeat occurence.

my father once beeped me while i was having my yearly lady exam because he needed tech support.....his number pad wouldnt work...i said...dad try the num lock key and when i get out of these stirrups i give ya a jingle.....OMG thats not even the worst story...but now im riled too...ken throw some growing grass my way....maybe blue grass to go with my blue columbines
plus get a hard drive somewhere same size as his... after you format adn reinstall his os and have it running well, andd have all his programs on and everythign workign well again..... ghost it over to to the different hard drive... that way when he messes it up again, you can format and ghost teh other hard drive back to it.
also put on AVG antivirus... and set it up to check his email
Guess I'm lucky..been working with WINXP for 2 years now, no firewall at all, only have a router in the middle. I have not had "1" single virus or crash in over 2 years!!! Sorry for your bad luck.....

Microsoft Anti spy ware, coupled with their firewall. Pretty good combo. I also use trend micros PC-cillian, its cheap, but near the best I have seen due to its load on the CPU. All the others are near nightmare levels.

problem is (or may be) MS does not support 98 anymore. They only do current and one gen back on software - so no MS firewall for 98, and i doubt their spyware would run at all.
Besides, if the user lets in the virus, then no software in the world will stop it from happening.
One sure fire way to get him to stop is to not fix it. Tell him you can't and make him take it to a professional that will CHARGE him an arm and a leg to do it.
I also like the idea of locking out websites. I did it to my old work computer and loved the look on some peoples faces when they tried to get to eBay and ticketmaster. We had one employee that was using the work computer to run his eBay store for concert tickets. Shut that down.
