Took a quick look at the Flora competition submissions. H*** S***! I've never seen so many flower submissions in my life! (not that I feel that that is inappropriate - i just expected a little more diversity).
Here is what I thought about submitting, and decided not to - how would you have voted on this one?

I have never given out so many 7s, 8s and 9s as I am this week. The photos are fantastic. So many excellent photos, I can see a lot of these photos being offered as prints soon. =o)
You really need to figure out how to post the photos in the forum or just give us the correct link. Please. This is the second time And I have tried to get to the picture but nothing. grr....
I really like the flower shots. People were very creative.

I can go to JEWEL and buy hot looking flower from plantation and take macro shot, would you give me 7.8 or 10?

Well for my region plant life is somewhat lacking right now. It's still early. Add the fact that out of the last seven days, it rained four days, was bitter cold one day, one day was a busy family filled holiday I had two choices an outdoor photo or an indoor "studio" I did a indoor photo but at the last minute I came up with something very special outdoors. Don't complain about the indoor photos...you have no idea what the weather conditions were!

After looking at all the "WILD"(sarcasm)... photos... in the last few minutes... I just wonder IF the weather is bad... and there is no opportunity to go out.... then why don't alot of you people... skip the challenge ?? ...it is very frustrating to folow the Challenge theme... try to meet all of the requirements...and it turns out to be a totally different contest...
Some of us decided to use bought flowers as our flora shots for the challenge instead of sitting it out because it's fun and challenging to try our very hardest. Personally I used a flower that is found in this area anyway, and it's pretty and I would hang it on my wall. I dont see what you're so bitter about..... or are you worried that a studio flower shot will beat you out this week?
and to answer, Pork chops are dead cut up fauna... gross but yeah I consider that to be fauna.
As I posted in the forums a few days ago, it's autumn here in the southern hemisphere. I tried to get some nice shots of autum foliage, but they just didn't turn out as nicely as the photo I took of a particular flower in my parents' garden (where I'm staying for Easter).
The challenge was pretty clear, it did not say 'flowers', it says 'flora' .. so I will probably upvote all wild flowers with multiple species or 'in situ' and downvote all single flowers , 'studio look alike shot'.
And congratulations to people who tried to do wildflowers or insitu flowers and smething different than 'jsut a flower' becasue the title 'flora' WAS not 'flowers'

Hey, flowers are pretty and often capture the "essence" of a plant better than any other of its parts. Is it any wonder there are lots of them in this challenge?

and if you look at the definition of the challenge, do you 'really' think that a single orchid shot taken in a 'studio' meet the challenge ? Really ?
The way I see it, if they are in a studio, the species is still part of a particular area, period, or environment, but they are simply not photographed WITHIN that area, period, or environment. The challenge didn't state that this had to be the case, so studio shots (in my opinion) still fit the challenge.
To counter-act people voting down flower or studio flower shots, I will be voting lowly on wild flower shots. This will help even out the voting for the people who have narrowed down the actual meaning and intent of the flora challenge.
OK, I would never bring myself to voting like this, but this is how silly it sounds to me when I read the narrow minded voting schemes that Im hearing here. Im all about good photography, and thats what Im looking for when Im voting. If its a good flower, plant, etc., BTW which all meet the definition of flora, then I will vote it on the merits of the photography. After a quick tour thru the flora challenge, I dont think I saw anything that didnt meet the challenge.
All this talk about voting down studio shots is silly. Not everyone on DPC lives in the same area and it's unrealistic to have a challenge like this where outdoor flowers are the only ones allowed because somewhere in the world the flowers aren't going to be in bloom. Up here in Canada the snow has JUST melted and there's not much for living vegetation other than bare ugly trees. So was I expected to sit this one out because I dont have pretty flowers outside? No way! I went out and bought myself a pretty flower (even one that's found here!) and took a nice picture. So how about we accept the studio flora shots just the same as the natural setting flora shots because they're all flora no matter how you look at it.
But, 'smiles, that's because there are too many who can't see out of their box, and therefore vote as though everyone is in their box.
Hmm. It makes my head spin. The challenge was flora.. not "an unflowering plant outside in it's own place... don't pick it!...." (shrug). It is a topic to photograph, just look at the photograph. I am not saying a photo of a plate should win or anything... come on..
I, myself, did not submit one of the quite interesting and spectacular shots I had taken of certain non flowering desert plants - mostly because I *know* that there is a bias on here towards pretty flowers.
A pretty flower will do well in a challenge no matter WHAT the challenge topic it seems!
Tom. Stop trying deeplink your pbase pix. It doesn't work. Instead of using the IMAGE button, use the LINK button (far right) button. PUt in the URL and then type a name for the link like 'a photo'. Thanks
