i had press credentials for the races this weekend, and really tried to make the most of it. i can't thank jason enough. not only did i learn a lot from his 'diary' thread, but he also gave me a lot of great advice.
this was an unbelievable experience. as a longtime fan, i've taken my camera to lots of races. it is a whole nother world, having a camera on the roof, on pit road, in the garage. it's also a lot different when you are shooting with a purpose, as opposed to popping off snapshots.
i'll have more images later, but here are some i've managed to upload so far.
Sounds like you had a great experience. I'm dying to hear more about it, and see some more shots. The yellow flag in the smoke is pretty cool, as is the winner at the finish line. I could see those in a racing magazine. Great work.
Great shots! Even more so considering the added difficulty of it being a night race (I hate night races ... LOL).
THANKS! i didn't mind the night part, but DAMN, it took me a while to get over the initial intimidation i had being around the heavy artillery that the guys from Getty, NASCAR Scene, ISC, etc were carrying around...
all i could think was, "what kind of shots can i even hope for with my pansy-a$$ 300D and slow glass?" i probably had to take 50 shots just to get 1 keeper. it was a fantastic learning experience, i didn't get killed or hurt, didn't get in anyone's way, met a lot of great people, and can't wait to go back...
...cause IRL comes to richmond at the end of june, and those babies do 180+ on this .75 mile short track!!! hopefully, i'll have upgraded 'something' by then ;-)

I'm a big IRL fan. You will love that race. They're a lot faster than the "tintops". I'm sorry I'm missing Indy this year. Last year was my 10th Indy 500. You got some great shots there. I especially like the close up pit action.
Those are great shots! I'm a huge Nascar fan and I would LOVE to do something like that. It sounds like it was an amazing experience. And that was a really great race too!
Here are a couple of my shots from Pocono last summer. They're from way up in the grandstands so they're nothing like yours. But with the zoom my camera has I was able to get somewhat close. I can't imagine being right in the pits like that!

Wow Denise those are pretty good did you use the kodak taking these..
My husband used a Hp 130 at Bristol last year and they werent bad for a low end model camera.. I like the zoom lens for real its a addiction to where you want more..... :)

More really neat shots skip, thanks for sharing. The two of Jarrett get to me as he is my fav driver. Both of them have that little something extra - the irony of UPS's slogan being so prominent at a time when they can't do much for you; and the real emotion of DJ's demise.

I love the races also and you have some great shots there. I live in Deltona Flroida (close to Daytona Beach) and I always make sure I make it to the 500 and 400. I never had press pass but have gotten pretty close. Here are a few from Daytona.

thanks, alan! i liked that one, too. the far guy is actually the guy that holds up the 'stop' and 'go' paddle, controlling traffic off of pit road. the near guy is responsible for monitoring the 'race off pit road'.
Typically I lost my internet connection before getting round to commenting on this lot ... for 3 long days! I did discover that that big silver box I bought for the living room shows moving pictures though ; )
It's great to see a race meet from the viewpoint of somebody who isn't scared of pointing the camera at random strangers. There's a lot here that stands out from the usual sports-shooter style and the processing only adds to that.
Too many favourites to mention, except what I think is the best pitstop photo I have ever seen ...
So did it get published? And where are these "war stories"? : )
