I live about 10 minutes from there and shoot there a lot. They say no professional photos and prohibit tripods (although I saw some using it without being stopped) and no flash photography indoors. Otherwise, it is very nice place to shoot. There are always people with tons of equipment shooting unmolested. I wouldn't worry about being harassed. They are so used to photographers, you won't get any attention unless you pull up in a truck filled with lighting equipment. :)
Right now is good time to go, as flowers are blooming, but some might be wilting now. In the middle of the garden, there are ponds with ducks, geese, and coy fish that's nice to shoot after shooting flowers.
