Hey Gang -

In a couple of weeks our church will be holding a Vacation Bible School, and have asked me to be their photographer. I have not done photography of this nature - I am more of a set up, point, think about it, take a nap, and then shoot. Any pointers? Basically, anything along the lines of advice for group, candid, children photography would be most helpful...

The prepared candid method worked for me. For couples greeting or talking with each other, place the shorter two on the outside of a
crescent curve and have the two tallest in the center. Everyone will
be looking at each other and smiling. Choose the most natural moment and take three or four pictures. If any person looks at you, don't count that as a shot. For three persons, stand two close together and have them talk to the third person. The heads should make a triangle for good composition. The same composition can be used with children with the addition of an activity holding their attention. Expression is everythng, so time your shutter with the most active faces. Be sure to take notes so that you cover everyone in the photos. Good luck.

I've done the same thing for our church for a couple years. A couple hints...

First, try to get shots at their level rather than shooting down at them. Shots seem to come out quite a bit nicer from that vantage point.

I try to get really close to small numbers of kids -- they always have great facial expressions, and they don't tend to be intimidated by the camera's presence like adults are!

There seem to always be tons of great opportunities for good shots since the kids are engaged in fun activities throughout the week -- painting, playing, etc.

PS -- To avoid the wrath of parents, do try to be sure that EVERY kid is represented in at least one shot! :)
