In 9 days BAMartin and I will be taking a trip to New Orleans, with our cameras of course. I'm looking for suggestions on "must see" destinations within the city. This will be one week BEFORE Jazzfest.

I used to live there and the one thing I strongly suggest is taking a drive out across the Causeway at sunset it is simply stunning. City Park has a turn of the century merry go round, as for the Quarter itself, St Louis Cathedral and the Aquarium of the Americas offers great photo opportunities, Jax Brewrey and Riverwalk for shopping in the Quarter, and go to Pat O'Brien's for a hurricane, if you have any females with you avoid Big Daddy's it can be rather stomach turning. But make sure you wear a really comfy pair of shoes and have lots of ones with you when you get there especially if you are driving or renting a car most of the lots are paid parking lots.
If you have time explore Old Towne Metairie, and there are a lot of cool privately owned museums in Kenner, including a toy train museum, a Saint's museum and one of the Mardi Gras Museums, the other big Mardi Gras Musesum is on the West Bank and is worth the admission price, just give yourself half a day at least for the one on the West Bank
The St Charles Street car is worth a ride - some great houses out there. The cemetries are also interesting and I'd recommend doing a walking tour of the French quarter the guides are pretty entertaining.
Jackson sq has plenty to photograph, but watch out for the cons (if someone bets they can tell you were you got your shoes - keep walking ;) you've got your shoes on your feet, in New Orleans....)
The aquarium and river side are also worth a visit.
The above-ground cemetery would be cool to shoot in.
It might be early enough in the season to take one of the swamp tours too. The mosquitos get unbearable in the summer (wear pants and take some bug spray), but my family really loved it.
Thanks everyone. I am getting very excited about this trip, and can not wait to share some photos with you when we get back. The next trip on my agenda is Iceland with Franziska Lang in May....I will be back for advice before then too.
We were just trying to figure out how to have a layover in Iceland when I go to Sweden this summer. You'll have to give ME advice when you get back!

Don't worry about it, it's highly unlikely to get bead in N'Awlins other than during Carnival and Mardi Gras that was over a month ago. But if you really want them you can buy them all over the quarter...My real question is where are you staying? In the Quarter? Or outside the city?
Our hotel is on Conti Street. That is only a couple of streets away, but I do not mind being up late for the photo ops :-)
That's a nice area of the Quarter, oh believe me the up late won't produce a lot of photo ops unless you have a balcony and can take photos of the crowds down on the streets.
I did forget to mention make sure you take a ride on one of the steamboats, and if you want to go to the Mardi Gras Museum on the West Bank take the Ferry from the Riverwalk it docks just behind the museum.
