I am considering a photo trip to Thailand.
As many of you know, I shoot Glamour photography with models and I am looking for exotic locations (ie. superb falls, superb jungle, superb beaches maybe with black sand, volcano maybe?, etc.).
I would like to know if any guys here have ever visited Thailand and have suggestions about:
- locations
- security (places to avoid, places safe, security regarding equipment, etc.)
- deals (hotels? places to look for? how to move around, etc.)
Or maybe you have suggestions of other places in the world?
I plan to travel with a small crew (1 model, 1 helper).
If you have website addresses to suggest, that would be cool too!
My brother just got back from Thailand - I have some photos in my portfolio under Mikes folder I will ask him what his thought are for photo shoots..... St. Vincent Island has black sand - from what I remember... since it was a volcanic Island..
Manny's in Borocay for a week...but he travels a lot and will be very helpful when he returns I'm sure. From the things I saw while I was there, your style of photography shouldn't run into much opposition. Particularly in Bangkok...it seems just about anything goes there (legal or not I have no idea, but I saw some things that would even make Jacko blush)
As for places to go, I'd ask what you were most interested in finding before making any comments. The terrain varies from Lush jungle to sunny tropical beaches to ancient small towns to Urban metropolis.
Let me know what you're after and I'll throw in my two bits.

(I was only there for a few weeks, but I saw a lot. I'm also getting regular updates from people I met there teasing me with their continued journeys)

Phuket (largely rebuilt already; amazing but true), Ko Samui, Laos, and about a hundred other little islands down there are all extremely picturesque. Many of the REALLY good waterfalls and stuff require a good deal of trekking to reach, but for about 200baht a day ($7) you could hire some locals to help you pack your gear. I had about 70lbs worth of gear on my back and don't regret one minute of the muscle spasms is caused after three days. also remember you're going into the wet season now, so everything gets more lush (and wet). There's a reason all of the huts in the mountains are built on stilts... :)
I strongly suggest Ko Phi Phi which is a tiny walking-only island that has some gorgeous views. I went there in 2003. Pukhet is way too commercialized, but the James Bond island is close by, so you might want to go anyway.

I have been to Thailand many times, though 7 years ago was my last visit. I was on Koh Samuu each time I was there in a small resort run by a family. If you rent a car you can always find exclusive beaches on the Island. Otherwide rent a boat and go out to Koh Phangan, which is less commercialised, or a national park with many islands which is also not too far away. No black sand though.
The Thais don't realy like nudity, but there are a lot of pretty exclusive places there where you could probably avoid being seen.
The Thais are extremely friendly. The food is great. I find it to be the perfect place for a vacation. Would love to go back there with my kids.
