here probably is a silly question.

The default DPI on photos are 72dpi i resize them and they are generally in excess of 300dpi, so when printing an image resized to 300dpi then obviousy my printer will use more ink opposed to printing the same photo at its default of 72dpi?

The reason i ask this is because the HP technician informed me that my photo printer cartridge would print in excess of 200 6x4 photos, and alas so far i have printed out 55 photos and almost out of ink??

i have found little to no relationship between when my computer thinks my printer is about to run out of ink and when it actually happens . . . (of course, i have a xerox printer that isn't made any more, um, actually, i believe xerox has exited that business ;-)

If your printing a 4x6 photo at 300dpi and a 4x6 at 72dpi, then the 300 will use more ink. But 72dpi is WAY too low to make a print with. I can't help you with your ink problem, but I would stick with 300dpi if you want the best quality.
