Hey, I got an email today from what appeared to be paypal. It is bogus though...they redirected me to a site that looked just like paypal and had the username/password boxes and it asked me to log in or my account would expire. DO NOT enter your information in there.
If you have entered your information, quickly change your password on your paypal account. https://www.paypal.com/ If you received the same email, forward it to spoof@paypal.com so they can get rid of these thieves.

While I am honored to be the part of DPC community, and while I would probably trust all of you with my email address, I opted to hide my email address in my profile just because of the email address collectors out there. I would encourage everyone to actually not display their email address in their profile. It is not so hard to PM someone, and from that point on communicate directly, once the initial communication is established.

I'm sure they didn't get my email address from here. They must have had a HUGE list because it was alphebetical -- about 10 email addresses appeared in mine, and they were like this...
dawoeiru@comcast.net, dabweroiu@comcast.net, dbqpoiqu@comcast.net, dbqeoriue@comcast.net...but basically 10 of them just for da and db @comcast.net

Someone, probably someone you have done business with in the past, sold a list with you address on it.
Oh if I ever find those #$(*#&$# haha. I'm not going to say it, but anyone who's been following my posts lately (and you'd have to be quick because a couple got deleted), knows who I'd blame. ;-)

One more thing. If you do even click on the link (which by the way does not take you to Paypal) it automatically tries to load a trojan onto you HD.
oh that's just great. I probably have it. I'm running symantec corporate -- you would assume that would catch it.
What software are you running to catch that?
Norton Internet Security 2005. It happened last week. Noton's gave an alert about the trojan, but said it didn't know how to handle it. I downloaded updates so hopefully that took care of it. Spysweeper and Ad-Aware never saw it.
Let their people contact the right people and shut down the site that is responsible.
They have revolving or evolving IP addresses so it does no good to contact Paypal about this. Paypal is quite aware of the problem.
geez...there's some slick folks out there, that's for sure. They're probably tucked away in some hut in a small country somewhere that they can't be tracked anyway.
I remember back in the day when AOL was the place to be...people would send you IM's and say that they were with AOL and that you needed to respond with your username and password to verify your account lol...people just never stop.
But now, it seems a bit more serious as anyone with access to your paypal would have access to your bank account and/or credit card (assuming you were verified -- as I would assume most people are).
also people collect email address from those chain emails that you get from your moms cousins sisters neighbor about a little prair to save the whales or something.
Tell everyone you know NOT to send BULK emails with jokes, funny web sites or just plain junk to you and everyone in the world at one time. Bu if they insist get a hotmail account and give that out as your junk address
I made a lot of people mad in the last year, but I have cut my spam down by 3/4 by just telling people to leave me alone and not to send me that junk.
never click a link in an email that looks like it came from ebay, your bank, credit card company or anyone you dont trust or know.
Never click the "click here to un-subscribeyour email address from our list". That only lets them know your email address is good and to send you MORE stuff.
A couple of years ago I thought I would be funny and put all kinds of bogus info on one of those phish emails asking for passwords. The next day I had seven more.

Having a throw away e-mail addy, or several of them, is a necessity. But hotmail isn't the best place to get one. I used to use hotmail, had about half a dozen e-mail accounts. One time I opened a new one but didn't use it right away. Came back to it a week later and found over 50 spams. I think hotmail sells random access to it's e-mail accounts.
