The macro shots of the current challenge are indeed interesting. I had some challenge with this myself - of course. With regards to the resulting pics - is light source and overexposure a common issue with macro shots? I am new to this, trying to learn and not meaning to offend anyone. My opinion is that a lot of the pictures from the current challenge are challenged with regards to issue.

The reason light becomes an important issue with macro shots is that the Aperture us usually wide open to allow the depth of field to be very shallow. This allows alot of light in, so to compensate, the shutter speed must be set very fast. If the balance of the two is not reached, lighting problems will be evidenced in the photo.

I was under the impression that most people who are doing macro work stop down their lenses as much as possible in order to increase the DOF. I personally like doing macro with the lens wide open to get an extremely shallow DOF (I actually like the way that looks) but when I have posted my pictures I always get lots of replies from people saying more DOF is needed.

So is the goal is to stop down the lens for a shallow or deep dof? Or is this a matter of personal preference? I went for deep dof - thinking this would enhance the overall pic.

Personal preference. I did shots from F/2.8 through F/11 of my subject. I then looked at all of them, and chose the most fitting. It ended up being the F/11 shot. As I stopped the aperture down I would slow the shutter one speed setting. I ended up with each photo having almost the same exposure for each aperture setting.
