I just signed up through paypal for the $25/year paid membership through paypal (I want to participate in members only challenges!). How long does it take before my membership is updated? Do I need to do anything else?

Your user icon is showing up in blue, which means you are a member. If your menus are not reflecting the member challenge, try logging out of the site and logging back in.
The system is automated, and your membership status is updated immediately. I've yet to hear of anyone having the problem you did (where the site wasn't behaving like you had your membership), but Terry's suggestion is exactly what I would have said. Glad all is working well :)
