Your digital camera will store information in the photograph file that includes things like the aperture, shutter speed, focal length, date/time and so on. Most photo editing or organisational programs are able to examine the EXIF data in the picture if you want to see it.
DPC staff sometimes ask for original photo files so that they can examine the EXIF data as well as the unmodified image to determine when the photo was taken and whether it has been illegally edited.
Editing your images in a graphics package can often strip the EXIF data out of your image so you should hang on to the originals of any images you consider submitting to DPC.
Hanging on to the originals is a good idea anyway because you might want to re-edit them later. Burning them to a CD is a good strategy.
