I would prefer to see people, but I'm not going to argue whether a shot is candid or not because it doesn't have a person in it. I just believe that the tradiditonal meaning of 'candid photo' would include a person.
I have a feeling the average person equates candid photography with people photography...probably mainly because people are the only subject I know of that can really differentiate between candid and controlled.
The animals were obviously posing for the camera...

I'm wondering how you would get a lion to pose for the camera... I would love to learn that trick. Each time I have been to the zoo, they just seem to ignore my commands for posing... Hmmmm.. maybe i'm doing something wrong....
Instead of getting people to concentrate on creativity like in pencils we end up with folks worrying about the challenge topic.
I would rather see more challenge topics easily met in technical spirit but allow us to push the creative envelope without fear of missing the basic challenge criteria.....Penicl in challenge...basic challenge met..Now we get to concentrate on ideas.
With such an open ended "Candid"...now you leave room for folks to screw you for missing THEIR interpretation..regardless of beauty of photo, overall inspiration or creative stretching.

It's impossible... even with the pencil challenge.. if you read through the comments, you will see stuff that indicates that the voter didn't like they way the pencil was used in the photo...

I know...but at least it's more obvious when the person is being a hardass versus confused. >:-D
In my book, yes to both... They are candid shots, but I passed on 3 different shots I had of animals because too many folks will likely shoot down animal shots... Part of the challenge for me is to get a bunch of shots I like, then figure out what would work best for the audience... More often then not, that is not the best shot...
