there is some really good advice here. there is one thing that i would also suggest, and i dont think it has been mentioned yet.
HOW you hold the camera itself can have great impact on image clarity, even camera readings. you would be amazed the difference better "posture" can make. one of the most helpful things ive learned is to make sure i hold the lens of the camera in the palm of my hand, as opposed to gripping it from the side. this really stabilises things. if you are like me it feels more natural to place my hand at the side, seems easier to turn the focus rings etc. but if you havent already, try forcing yourself to hold the lens from underneath - thumb on one side, fingers on the other. open you hand, palm up, and rest the camera on it... it should feel balanced and relatively stable.
