I really enjoy being a DPC member. I've had a blast entering as many challenges as I can. Good score, bad score - doesn't really matter that much. I truly am having fun and learning.
What I don't get is the reasoning behind the challenge in active voting today - 'Pain'.
My first reaction to the challenge topic was this challenge wasn't for me and I tried to forget about it. Then I thought, maybe I can come up with something. Tried taking some photos at the kid's basketball games thinking maybe I could get the right expression on a scramble for a loose ball. That didn't work. Some expressions were there, but they were determination, and sometimes maybe anger - not pain.
The more I thought about it the more I again came back to the question - why Pain? Aren't there enough painful images to see in the news today to go around already? If you observe someone in pain, wouldn't that be the time to put DOWN the camera and offer some assistance?
I'm sure there will be some "staged" shots in this challenge - maybe that's ok. I guess the cliché, "different strokes for different folks" applies here. I see there are 215 entries so it appears many were able/willing to capture the emotion pain in a photo...I haven't looked yet, and not sure I'm going to.

i agree 100%, but from a different perspective. for me, this is no different than a theme of "garbage". Garbage isn't pleasant to look at, so how do you vote on something that was intentional done to be unpleasant?
Pain is painful to see. How do you take a good photo of something diturbing?

Ok, but garbage applies to an inanimate object. Pain, as applied to this challenge in capturing the emotion thereof, is about a living object. BIG difference in my opinion.

Do we not also see pink, road signs and light everyday? It's just a challenge, get over it.

So if you see someone in pain, you ignore it, or better yet grab your camera and take a picture because it's an everyday occurrence?
Sorry, just doesn't seem like an appropriate subject matter to photograph unless you are perhaps a photojournalist and can't avoid it in your line of work.
So let's say you took a picture of a mother giving birth. Painful, yes? Does that make it bad? Or can it be beautiful?
Pain can be interpreted in many ways. Taxes can be painful. Seting up a complicated studio shot can be a pain. If you don't like the typical idea of pain, why not try to show pain in a way that's uplifting, humorous, or meanigful to you?
Likewise, I feel that garbage can be beautiful. It's up to you as a photographer, if you don't like a popular interpretation of a subject, to put your spin on it and show everyone how it should be done. Pictures of pain need have nothing to do with reality vs. staging... and can simply focus on meaning. :)
Just because it's 'pain' doesn't mean that it's a bad, or even negative, subject.
