If you never buy any other filter (assuming your camera can accept filters) by a skylight filter.
This simple filter, little more than a piece of glass, can save you lots and lots of headache. Buy the filter, clean your camera's lens really well, put it on your camera, and basically forget it's there. It protects the original lens from scratches, can help protect the lens from drops, and if it does get scratched or broken it's a lot cheaper to replace.
I'm sure there are reasons not to keep it on (for instance it will add to vignetting if you have to stack too many other filters), but overall it's a nice little peace of mind.
